On May 16th from 6:00pm to 8:30pm in the Auditorium, the PTA will host the screening of the documentary

I’m Not Racist… Am I? 

12 NYC teens were asked to spend one year talking about racism. This film tracks their journey through 5 intense workshops.
 
Parents and students are encouraged to attend.
The film makers suggest that this is appropriate for kids in 7th grade and older but parents of 6th graders may view the trailer to help you decide whether or not it is appropriate for your child.  A trained facilitator will guide a conversation after the 90 minute film.

Advance tickets are $10 for adults ($15 at the door) and $5 dollars for students

Free Summer Intensive for Rising 11th Graders Interested in Audio Engineering & Music Production

DEADLINE IS MAY 4 - ACT QUICKLY

The CUNY Creative Arts Team (CAT), with funding from the Mayor’s Office for Media and Entertainment, is launching a *free* initiative for current 10th grade students called Sound Thinking NYC. The program kicks off with a Summer Intensive for young people (especially young women and non-binary/gender-nonconforming folks) who are interested in exploring career opportunities in the music industry. Participants will learn about audio engineering, music production, sound design, and audio technology from educators and professionals in the industry. Graduates of the Summer Intensive will be invited to participate in a series of events during their 11th grade school year, apply for paid summer internships before they begin 12th grade, and apply to take free college credit courses at CUNY during their senior year of high school. Teacher Staff Appreciation Day

As parents we are often looking for ways to lead by example and show our children how important it is to show respect, appreciation and compassion to our fellow people. Our teachers at ICE, although as humanly fallible as each one of us, make superhuman efforts to go above and beyond the call of duty - like teaching science in the AM and coaching softball in the PM.  They use their lunch breaks and stay after-school to help students who might be struggling with extra tutoring, at no cost. 
 
It is for these reasons, and more, that on Teacher/Staff Appreciation Day, we the families want and need to come together to say thanks for all they do to enhance our children's intellectual, emotional and extracurricular pursuits. And what better way to say thanks than with FOOD!
 
We invite any and all families to donate homemade or store bought food for this year's Teacher/ Staff Appreciation Day on Friday, May 18th from 7:40 am – 2 pm.
 
Breakfast Pastries, sandwiches, salads, appetizers, fruit salad, chocolate mousse, banana pudding, lemon squares, brownies, cookies...what can your family donate? 
 
In the past we have been amazed at how our community comes together to make this day so special.  Don't have time to cook? You can donate your time or give a monetary donation, since we may need to supplement with a caterer.

Day of volunteers are needed for shopping, breakfast and coffee service, lunch set up and service, clean-up and body therapies.

ICE Student Photograph Exhibited at Metropolitan Museum through May 28th

ICE junior, Milena Sosa, received a Gold Key Award, the highest regional recognition in the 2018 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards for a photograph she took as part of her photography elective with Jeffrey Romanov in the fall.  Presented by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, the Scholastic Awards are the longest-running and most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the United States. In addition to the Gold Key Award, Milena was also awarded a Silver Key and two Honorable Mentions for other works submitted to the competition. 
 
This year the literary and arts professionals who served as judges selected 600 Gold Key winners, based on originality, technical skill, and emergence of a personal voice or vision, from nearly eleven thousand works submitted by just over four thousand students in grades 7–12 to the New York City Region of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. The selection was drawn from more than 300 schools in all five boroughs. The 600 Gold Key Art and literary works are exhibited at The Met Fifth Avenue in the Ruth and Harold D. Uris Center for Education through May 28th. 
 
"The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers' mission is to identify students with exceptional artistic and literary talent and present their visionary work to the world through recognition, exhibition, publication, and scholarships. Established in 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards bring the work of young people to regional and national audiences. Former recipients include artists Andy Warhol, Cy Twombly, Kay WalkingStick, and John Baldessari—all represented in The Met collection—and writers Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, and Joyce Carol Oates."
